El emblemático Camí de Cavalls, una joya natural y cultural de Menorca, enfrenta desafíos significativos derivados de su uso intensivo. Esta ruta costera de largo recorrido, que se extiende a lo largo de la pintoresca costa, ha sido durante mucho tiempo un paraíso para los amantes del senderismo, el ciclismo y la equitación. Sin embargo, su popularidad ha llevado a problemas de erosión y degradación en varios tramos, lo que plantea interrogantes sobre su sostenibilidad a largo plazo.
Existe un plan de actuación para abordar estos desafíos que pretende implementar medidas de gestión y recuperación que restauren la ruta histórica, preservando al mismo tiempo su integridad ambiental y cultural.
Existe un estudio previo elaborado por la empresa Axia Geología y Medio Ambiente SL, que identificaba ya hace unos años un total de 342 puntos erosivos a lo largo del Camí de Cavalls. Según el Dr. Xisco Xavier Roig, experto en Geografía y Geología, aproximadamente el 80 por ciento de estos puntos son recuperables en un lapso de pocos años.
Los tramos más afectados se distribuyen de manera relativamente homogénea a lo largo de la costa norte y sur de la isla. En particular, áreas como Ets Alocs en la zona de Tramuntana y los barrancos de Cala en Porter en el sur presentan niveles significativos de erosión. También en Sant Lluís (se puede consultar en la hemeroteca de Menorcaaldia.com) se alzaron voces que advertían que las características del terreno estaba generando que los usuarios optaran por rutas alternativas, generando pasos por fincas privadas al no poder pasar con seguridad por el trazado original del Camí.
Una preocupación adicional destacada por el estudio son los 48 puntos identificados como riesgo geológico, con 32 en la costa norte y 16 en la costa sur. Estos puntos representan desafíos adicionales en términos de estabilidad del terreno y seguridad para los usuarios de la ruta.
El informe de Roig también destacaba iniciativas positivas que han contribuido a la conservación del camino, como la construcción de escaleras de ‘paret seca’ en Cala en Blanes y acciones espontáneas de conservación realizadas por individuos en lugares como Cala Mica y el tramo de Alcaufar a la Torre de Alcaufar.
La erosión y los riesgos geológicos no son los únicos desafíos que enfrenta el Camí de Cavalls. La creciente popularidad de eventos deportivos como las carreras de trail ha exacerbado la presión sobre ciertos tramos, generando la necesidad de una gestión cuidadosa para equilibrar la accesibilidad con la conservación.
En respuesta a estos desafíos, varios gestores deportivos se han involucrado en la recuperación y mantenimiento de tramos específicos del Camí de Cavalls. Su colaboración con las autoridades locales y los grupos de conservación es fundamental para garantizar que las acciones sean llevadas a cabo de manera responsable y en armonía con los valores de la Reserva de la Biosfera de Menorca.
